PHOTO MUSIC // Soulection; Sound of Tomorrow with Freddie Joachim x AbJo
When you think of Hip-Hop what do you think of? I sure hope you don’t say any radio pop artists nowadays… I have nothing against it, but seriously, these two are still what defines the “Golden Age” of what’s left of REAL Hip-Hop. Hailing from San Diego, Freddie Joachim and AbJo have the genre on lock.

This was my first Hip-Hop show since ’04 and I was expecting it to be as it always was years ago, but this was way different than I remembered it. I used to DJ back in ‘04 and this show reminded me of how involved I was in the art of Hip-Hop. I used to participate in shows and enter DJ scratch competitions. This brought me back – hard. I met up with Andre Power and Joe Kay the founders of Soulection. They were both real sick guys and I just met them that day! Along with the great music in the background – local San Diego artist, Andre Lupian was doing a live painting. A lot of his art work consists of urban graffiti style with finesse, very clean. He’s currently working on a Bonsai Tree series.

The venue was really feeling it. I forgot how this felt after so many years. After a few hours gone by and a couple of beers in, it was time for the show to begin…
Freddie Joachim, originally from San Diego under Mellow Orange records has been making music since ’96. His music consists of Jazz influences and Melodic Downtempo instrumentals, things that I listen to religiously on lazy days where you just want to lay back and lounge. I’ve been following Freddie’s music since ’09 and it definitely never disappoints. If you’re a fan of Melodic Hip-Hop with a touch of Soulful Jazz look no further.

Aaron ‘AbJo’ Nash also known as a member of The Midnight Kids, another San Diego native under Soulection Records and a current student of Art Institute San Diego majoring in Audio Production is an accomplished artist. His style has an Electronic Downtempo feel almost similar to ‘Flying Lotus’ in my opinion. I’ve only recently discovered his music and I’m already hooked. You got to hear it to believe.

This night was one of the best experiences I’ve felt in a long time. Big thank you to Andre Power and Joe Kay of Soulection, Freddie Joachim of Mellow Orange, AbJo and Andre Lupian for the visually aesthetic artwork! This is one memory that I’ll forever hang on to. Until next time.
Proper Style:Proper Mindset
Cheers.
