Last Saturday I flew into Los Angeles to catch up with all the drift shindigs going down at Long Beach. The roads were all prepped and everybody was ready for another season of Formula Drift. It was cool seeing some familiar faces such as the Low N’ Slow crew, Frawsty from OMGDrift, and others. Likewise, it was neat seeing the colorways of the drift cars and returning driver Tony Angelo. Also, there was this really neat skateboarding event near the Fatlace car show event.

I usually go into a fully detailed explanation about our travels at Formula D, but I felt like the photos would do more justice. Also, I’ve spent about 14 hours on the PC typing 300 words, deleting 300 words, rinse, and repeat. I guess I’m out of words, but to make up for the 1000 word count, I have a nice selection of photos. As they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words, so including the photos, my word count supersedes the writing requirement. Jokes aside, FD was a great event and the turn out was banging. But before I close this post I’d like to give a huge thanks to Formula D for the opportunity of covering this event and prior events.

Due to other responsibilities for our brand, this will be my last event for Formula D. While I won’t be actively shooting events, we can assure you the rest of the staff will be more than welcome to share their stories with you. So without further ado, check out my photo roll at round 1 of the 2012 FD season!

Craving for more pics? Stay tuned for Jaryl’s post in the coming days!

I’m off to Los Angeles tomorrow for Formula Drift at Long Beach. I’ve got a new bag by Amazon to accompany me this time around. It holds all my camera gear easily and it’s definitely travel friendly. Funny thing is, I bought this yesterday for my flight tomorrow and it’s everything that I could hope for in a camera backpack. As you can see in the photos, my Nikon D7000, SB-900 flash, Canon T70, and my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 lens fits well. It’s all snug and good to go. See you all tomorrow. By the way, peek the Fitted Life button up above?

Monday through Friday, I wake up to the sound of the alarm clock blaring at 5:20AM. I dislike that sound. I dislike that sound with a passion. It’s a dreadful sound that reminds me, “Wake up, it’s time to head to you day job.” It also says, “Wake up, it’s time to wake up from your dream job.”

Fitted Life is my dream job, but it is not my day job. From 7AM to 4PM you can find me typing away at a cubicle working as an engineer. This is what I really went to school for. I draw out designs, do engineer like things, and live the typical American dream: go to college and find a job that can provide financial security. Even if it does provide a pretty good chunk of change, it still isn’t my dream job.

I want my dream job so bad. I want to run Fitted Life full time. I want to make the “day job-dream job” switch and pursue my dream in full force. Yet, that would be unwise at this moment. That would be a childish mistake especially when my dream job cannot pay my bills just yet. My day job deserves more credit.

In “Quitter,” Jon Acuff describes our day job as a means to fund our dream job. My day job gives me the freedom to say yes to the right opportunities and no to the wrong ones. For example, a couple of weeks ago I turned down a video project gig that didn’t fit my criteria. I was not pressured into the gig because I knew I had a day job as my financial backup. With that freedom, I could easily say no to projects that are not in my dream job’s interest. However, imagine if I didn’t have my day job. I would be forced into that project. I would need that financial flow so I could pay off my bills and survive. I would have to sell out because I didn’t have the freedom to say no.

Jon also mentions the lesson we learn from our day job. My dream job and day job tends to blend in with one another. If I feel crappy at home, it will show at work. If I feel crappy at my job, that negativity accompanies me back home. If I’m successful at my day job, I can be successful at my dream job. It’s that simple. Likewise, if we treat our day job as a learning experience, we can take those values and apply them successfully towards our dream job. Do well in one aspect of your life and the rest shall follow through.

One of the most important lessons Jon taught me was that “discipline begets discipline.” Jon explains this lesson by walking us through his road towards healthier living. While he made the switch from junk foods to healthier foods, he became disciplined. He ditched the “see-food” diet and took the responsibility of eating right. While he embarked on this journey, he noticed an improvement in other aspects of his life. By taking control of his diet, he was able to take control of his life. Our ability to stay put reminds us that if we can keep a day job, then we can keep a dream job. If we can manage ourselves wisely at our day job, we can apply that discipline towards our dream job.

So don’t quit just yet. I didn’t and I’m about one year into my day job. It’s a job that I worked hard for. It’s a job that I spent 4 years prior studying my butt off. It’s a job that many people across the State would kill for in this awful economy. It’s a job that allows me the financial freedom to build my dream job the way I envisioned it. Even if it isn’t a job that I love, it’s a job that I like.

Eventually, there will be a day when I’ll make the transition from day job to dream job. However, for now I’ll cherish my day job and learn every lesson that I can draw from it. I’ll look forward to that alarm clock blaring at 5:20AM, reminding me to wake up, “It’s time to head to your day job, your dream job’s advocate.”

Anyways, check out this mashup called Cloudburn in Paris done by Gabe Flaherty. It’s a mixture of Feed Me’s remix of Cloudburn and Ni**as in Paris by Kanye West and Jay-Z. The Cloudburn mix with Drake caught my attention easily and this one does equally well with Kanye West and Jay-Z. Check out the tune below.

I went a little crazy with part 3 of our S/S collection essentials. For part 3 I pieced together some of my favorite items for spring. Accompanying the Family Crest Tank Top are shorts from Urban Outfitters, the shades are Mosley Tribes (definitely a favorite), white/beige belt is from H&M (I think? Not too sure), wallet supplied by Gucci, and the kicks are Onitsuka Tiger.

When I first started designing the family crest logo, I was looking through a lot of family crest designs that were popularized back in early Europe. I was fascinated at how every family had their own unique family crest. They all had images and characters that best represented their backgrounds. Also, even the smallest details in the crest held a valuable amount of information. Taking that inspiration I came up with our family crest logo which was used for packaging. If you’ve purchased goods from us, you’ve probably noticed this design detailing the packaging. We decided to take it up a notch and print it on tank tops for summer. They came out great and we’re excited to share this design with you all.

Art is a universal language with no boundaries. Even if the world consist of some many unique countries with different dialects and cultures, we all can speak through art. Whether it be speaking through photography or style, our art helps us communicate with our surroundings and the world that encompasses us all. It is a bridge that narrows our differences and allows us to speak freely and share our common interest with one another.

Though our design production house is planted here in California, we tell tales of local stories and beyond. We are fascinated by people around the world and how their art contributes to our daily lives. Oceans away in Brussels, Belgium, David Olkarny speaks a similar language. His first language isn’t English, but his art speaks in words we fully understand and devour. He is carefree, young, and has a passion for photography. His work is filled with laughter and delivers a message with each shot. Even if we are from different parts of the world, his photography communicates in a common language, one we know best.
